A)       CARGO SEGREGATION

Why there is a need for the segregation of different cargoes?

Reason for segregation

The reasons for segregation are 2 cargo will be damaged  if stowed in the same hold ( compartment )

such as:

  1. Segregation between the dangerous goods is shown in the IMDG Code segregation table. 
  2. Segregation between cargo emitting strong odour such as soap and other cargo sensitive to these odours such as tea
  3. Segregation between  (food) and (cement). dusty cargo and cargo damage by dust such as foods.
  4. Segregation between cargo must ventilation or it will be damaged and other cargo damaged by ventilation. 
  5. Segregation between heavy cargo and fragile cargo.

How are segregation requirements indicated?

Segregation is achieved by:-

  • keep clear distances between incompatible hazardous materials 
  • keep one cargo in hold and another cargo in different cargo hold 
  •  

Segregation is achieved by:-

1) Under-deck: 

 Cargo can be segregate d by stowing different types in different compartments.

2) On Deck: 

cargo can be segregated by separating different types with at least 12 meters of horizontal distance.


B)       CARGO SEPARATIONS

Reason for separation

to prevent mix-up of different shipments.

Examples for the need to separate cargo:-

  • grade of goods are Different . 
  • same cargo for two receivers. 
  • same cargo for two ports.

Separation is achieved by:-

  1. making distinctive mark. 
  2. Using coloured nets or ropes or paints or canvas or tape.
  3. Using dunnage.
  4. Leaving horizontal distance between different shipments.
  5. Natural separation.
