welcome to Marine Courses Center today we will discuss ship constructions & ship construction terms & ship structure terminology
ship constructions in different types of ships
General cargo ships
are capable of carrying various general cargo except that specified as special cargo.
cargo liners: which give regular services, sailing fixed schedules.
Trampers: which operate without any fixed time schedules or regular ports of call but which respond to the market situation anywhere in the world
Feature of GC ships
•Compound or transverse framing system
•The ship has a Double bottom
•Divided to cargo holds ( lower hold, tween deck….)
•Provided with derricks, winches, deck crains, and booms
•The ship has a bulwark
Cross Section in General Cargo ship

Bulk carries
A vessel designed to carrya different cargo types in bulk state (Grain, Cement , Ore )

Feature of BC ships
•Large hatch opening are a feature of all bulk carriers, in order to facilitate rapid and simple cargo handling.
•They do not carry cargo handling equipment, Since they trade between special terminals which have
special equipment. (gearless bulk carriers).
•Single deck ship
•A newly constructed bulk ships are double skin structure
•compound framing system
•The capacity of ballasttanks 30% to 40% of the total capacity of the ship
•BC ship has upper and lower hopper tanks to control the ships center of gravity
•It has a large hatch opening

Container ships
It is designed for the carriage of general cargo special steel units called containers with length (20 – 40 feet) , loading and discharging at special container terminals in ports, always working on a schedules (liner).
Feature of Container ships
§Single deck ship
§High strength deck
§The upper deck is a flush deck
§Double Wall sided ship used as a side wing tanks
§There are a torsion boxes in the both sides
§The cargo hatches is extremely wide ( 80% of the ship wide)
§The ship holds divided to cells
§Compound or longitudinal framing system

Oil Tankers

It is designed to hold fossil fuel from oil fields to discharging ports.
The large tanker is that the VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) and ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier).
Feature of Container ships
The new constructed tankers are a double hull
It divides into tanks by the longitudinal and transverse bulk heads
Compound or longitudinal framing system
There is no bulwark
There is a Round gunwale strake
Long draft and tiny freeboard
Gearless ship
Some types constructed with expansion trunk

Double Hull Construction
Double bottoms are longitudinally framed, the development being almost like that for other ships with supporting plate and bracket transverse floors

RO/RO ships
This ships are designed with facilities for quick loading and discharging cargo on wheels – so that car drivers themselves can drive in and out through hydraulically operated bow or stern Ramps(specialdoors).
Feature of RO/RO ships
§Multi deck ship s
§Open and closed RORO cargo spaces
§It has after and side Ramps (Straight stern ramp/door)
§Always accommodation forward
§Transverse or compound framing system
§Gearless ship
§Very advanced ventilation system to resets the exhaust from emitted from vehicles
§There are a heeling tanksastern
